Driving Away Stress

Its morning rush hour, and your blood is boiling. You have exactly five minutes to go to work and you get a great traffic connection on the freeway. You look at the orange garland and suddenly you feel like you are stuck in the construction field. The stress of being late for work seems overwhelming. Or, maybe 5:30 pm and you're running to get your four-year-old out of daycare. A car suddenly crashed in front of you and you had to brake. You rarely escape an accident. Again, your stress level is rising and you are having a hard time dealing with it. In today's world, driving is a major source of stress. Many of us spend countless hours on traffic.

Driving stress is a fact of modern life. There will always be potholes, dark drivers, and silly passengers. Inevitably, you will face traffic jams to get to work, the store or school. There will always be surprises when you hold the wheel that you can do it. When you can't take stress off the road, there are ways to reduce it. For example, you might consider investing in a quiet staircase. Classical music can be very enjoyable on a difficult driving day. Or the way you are trying to negotiate your way through traffic you may choose to listen to a nature sounds CD. If you don't have a CD player, cassette tapes are another option.

Another method that many drivers use is to drive five to ten minutes earlier than necessary. So you don't have to work under time pressure. Those five or ten minutes can make a huge difference in your daily commute. Plus, feel free to spend those extra minutes to yourself when you come to school or work. For most of us, driving is a necessary part of the day. The trick is to make it as comfortable as possible to help relieve your stress. Buying a comfortable seat cushion or a relaxing back can do wonders for our mood. Singing or whistling in the car can be another effective stress reliever.
